Opening my own business
Opening my own business is everything I thought it would. Exciting, challenging, nerve-racking, rewarding and the opportunity to self-actualize.
4 things I have learned
- It is just as challenging as I imagined it would be. Resigning from a position I held for 20 years and leaving a regular pay check, health insurance and retirement benefits can be frightening. Thank goodness I had a plan. But like Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight boxing champion once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” So you get knocked down, but you realize, this is what you want and this is what you expected.
- Boy, am I green. I haven’t felt this green since I graduated from WV Wesleyan College in 1983. Going through another wave of uncertainty in my life and trying to find my way through. Very challenging, but I literally feel myself growning. That is the exciting part.
- Most folks don’t understand. Unless you have been through this, entrepreneurship, it is mystifying to comprehend. My friends try. My wife tries. But, sometimes I feel as though I am in this by myself. I know I will make it. I have to make it. Failure is not an option. Just keep swinging.
- I treasure the freedom it provides. In the end, I am in this for the autonomy it provides. To be my own person. The freedom to be me. Blaze my own trail. My unofficial tag line, ‘I just wanna be Me, for You’.
