Highlights is a 30 minute weekly TV show featuring organizations, events, grass-roots efforts and people who move our state and community forward in a positive way.

The show is a collaboration with Kanawha County Schools, Suddenlink Communications, and Jim Strawn & Company.

The show airs daily at 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Suddenlink’s channel 17.

The show airing November 2, 2020 – November 9, 2020 features Guys Night Out (In) to benefit the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter & the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction event.

Guys Night Out (In)

We interviewed Margaret Taylor, Program Director of the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter and Danny Forinash, Guys Night Out committee member.

Margaret discussed the mission and need for the Sojourner’s Shelter.

YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter for Homeless Women & Families provides emergency shelter and supportive services around the clock, every day of the year for homeless single women, women with children, men with custody of their children and intact families. This 75-bed facility offers a secure, healthy environment with crisis intervention, case management and counseling to help individuals achieve long-term self-sufficiency. They maintain a successful recidivism rate of about five (5) percent annually, well below the national average of individuals returning to shelters. Children’s programs include computer and art classes, tutoring, drug-free education, supportive counseling and field trips. Recovering from and preventing future homelessness is the goal for all who take shelter with them.

She also pointed out some facts of interest from 2019: YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter provided 23,684 nights of shelter to 614 homeless children and adults, 69,970 nutritious meals, 3,120 hours of counseling, and 7,409 hours of case management. As a result of YWCA Sojourner’s efforts, 86% of participants secured and maintained housing, 78% obtained employment, and 74% maintained their employment past 90 days.

She passionately discussed the importance of the Guys Night Out (In) event.

Danny talked about this years event. Like many social gather events in 2020, Guys Night Out has been modified to a Guys Night In and COVID-19 safe ongoing event.

They are ‘launching’ it at Adelphia’s in Charleston on Capitol Street on Saturday, November 7th. Committees members and some staff will be on hand during the WVU vs Texas football game.

This year Guys Night In features a raffle to raise necessary funds to assist the Sojourner’s Shelter. The raffle’s Grand Prize is a brand new Mountaineer edition Kawasaki Teryx-4 UTV from our friends at Harley Davidson of South Charleston. Raffle tickets are $100. Other prizes to win include: $500 worth of pizza from Papa Johns, WVU football and basketball paraphernalia and much more. With your $100 raffle ticket, you will also get 20% off at many restaurants for chicken wings.

Signature Chefs Auction

We also interviewed Chef Dennis Harris, Edgewood Country Club and Valerie George Ellis, volunteer with March of Dimes.

We discussed a modified Signature Chefs Auction to benefit the March of Dimes. A small private gathering will be held at Edgewood Country on November 9th beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Chef Dennis discussed why this event means so much to him while Valerie discussed the Kelly L. George Volunteer Award.

Chef Jeremy Still, who was instrumental in starting the Chefs Auction, influenced Chef Dennis. Chef Still passed away in 2015, but left his legacy and the importance of giving back to Chef Dennis. That legacy continues today.

Valerie discussed the Volunteer Award which is named after her mother, Kelly L. George, who passed away this past summer. Kelly was a life-long advocate and volunteer for the March of Dimes.

We also discussed the online auction. A great way for you to support the March of Dimes.
