Highlights is a 30 minute weekly TV show featuring organizations, events, grass-roots efforts and people who move our state and community forward in a positive way.
The show is a collaboration with Kanawha County Schools, Suddenlink Communications and Jim Strawn & Company.
The show airs daily at 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Suddenlink’s channel 17.
The show airing June 8, 2020 – June 15, 2020 highlights the WV Manufacturing Association Educational Fund’s ‘What’s So Cool About Manufacturing’ program.
We interviewed Monica Cross, Program Director of WVMA Educational Fund and Tom Reed, Program Consultant of WVMA Educational Fund.
They gave us an overview of the Educational Fund and the Explore: the new manufacturing. Explore the New Manufacturing is a multi-dimensional undertaking of hope, promise, community, and a pledge to be intentional in providing routes for young West Virginians to remain in the state through pathways leading to careers in manufacturing.
They both discussed their ‘What’s So Cool About Manufacturing’ program. (WSCAM)
Students in seventh and eighth grade are starting to think about careers and the high school courses that will help prepare for them. The WSCAM Student Video Contest introduces student teams to exciting careers at local manufacturing companies. Each team then creates a video to promote the company and careers to their fellow students and community members.
We interviewed Greg Ward, Teacher-Advisor at John Adams Middle School and Kim Mack, President of Cyclops Industries, Inc located in South Charleston WV.
Greg had 7th & 8th grade students participating in the program in partnership with Cyclops Industries. Both Greg and Kim discuss the numerous benefits the students gain by actually being introduced to the inner workings of a manufacturing plant.
Kim talked about their business. Cyclops Industries, Inc. was established in 1959 by her grandfather who held many patents while working at Union Carbide, and celebrated their 60th year in business in 2019. Cyclops Industries, Inc. is a designer and manufacturer of safety sight glasses, viewport assemblies, sight flow indicators, spray rings, sight lights and sight glass replacements for observing processes in industrial pressure vessels and pipelines. Cyclops sight glass provides maximum safety under high pressure, high temperature, corrosive and volatile processing operations. They can withstand a wide thermal shock range and are capable of resisting blow out or rupture.
A compulation of the ‘What’s So Cool About Manufacturing’ video produced by the students can be viewed by clicking here.
We concluded the show by interviewing 2 students from John Adam who particiapated in the program.
Ireland Wiley and Ally Heath, both 8th graders and students of Mr. Ward participated in the program at Cyclops. They discussed their experiences, the fascinating things they learned and the process in producing the contest video.
