The show is a collaboration with Kanawha County Schools, Suddenlink Communications and Jim Strawn & Company.

The show airs daily at 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Suddenlink’s channel 17.

The show airing May 6, 2019 –  May 13, 2019 highlights the Smart 529 Plan from the WV Treaury Department & the Alban Arts Center.

We interviewed Gina Joynes, Deputy Treasurer of Communications for the WV State Treasurer’s Office.

She discussed the Smart 529 College Savings Plan. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan designed to encourage families to save for college. Earnings on 529 investments accumulate tax-free, and distributions are tax-exempt, as long as they are applied toward eligible education expenses such as tuition and room and board. More than 100,000 future students nationwide have taken advantage of the SMART529 college savings plan. The SMART529 college savings plan provides an opportunity for every citizen to invest in the future – at every stage of life.

The plan provides an opportunity for all West Virginians to save for their education goals. To this end, the SMART529 college savings plan, administered by The Hartford, is not limited to universities, but also may be used to finance higher education at vocational and technical schools, culinary schools, worker retraining classes, community colleges and many others. SMART529 savings can also be used for other approved educational expenses.

Gina then talked about their upcoming 5th Annual Smart 5.29K Run/Walk scheduled for May 18, 2019 at Appalachian Power Park beginning with registration at 8:00 a.m. with the Run starting at 9:00.

The race is presented by the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office and Mission West Virginia, in partnership with Braley & Thompson, Children’s Home Society of West Virginia, KVC, NECCO, and Pressley Ridge. The SMART5.29K raises money to establish SMART529 College Savings Plans for children recently adopted out of the foster care system in West Virginia. All proceeds from the 5.29K registration, minus a $3.00 race fee, will be deposited into SMART529 College Savings Accounts. The accounts will be awarded through a selection process administered by Frameworks and Mission West Virginia.

We also interviewed Adam Bryan, Director of Alban Arts Center located in St. Albans, WV.

The Alban Arts Center is a small arts organization in the heart of downtown St. Albans.  Located within the historic Alban Theater, originally built in 1938 as a movie house, the Alban Arts Center provides a wide array of artistic opportunities for St. Albans and the surrounding community within its intimate 225 seat theater.  Primarily focusing on the performing arts, the Alban produces 4-6 productions every year, in addition to hosting several other theatre companies and touring productions.  The Alban, as a small and energetic organization, can segue from large, family oriented casts to intimate and intense dramas in the course of their season; and even produces an annual Shakespeare in the Park at St. Albans City Park.  The Alban also hosts concerts, movies, and a variety of other performances throughout the year.

Adam discussed their upcoming show, in which the legendary Ed Asner plays God in ‘God Help Us’!

Show times are May 17th & 18th at 7:30 p.m. in the Alban.

GOD HELP US! is a play ripped from today’s headlines, an evening’s entertainment that is at once hilarious, unifying and thought provoking.

Two pundits, Larry (a liberal lad) and Randi (a conservative gal), find themselves confronted by GOD (the legendary Ed Asner), a wise, sarcastic, cantankerous and wildly funny character who is offended by what America’s political leaders have done to America. He has brought Randi and Larry to Purgatory for a lively debate about the issues of our time. And whomever he finds more persuasive will get God’s “mighty thumb on the scale” in one or the other’s favor.

Given the current state of our politics – GOD HELP US! speaks to audiences of all political persuasions with one essential argument, that we must listen to each other so that we can all live – and laugh – together.
