The show airing October 16, 2017 – October 23, 2017 ‘highlights’ the National Youth Science Foundation, Pro-Kids, Inc., & the University of Charleston Men’s Basketball program.
We interviewed Andrew Blackwood, Executive Director, National Youth Science Foundation. He discussed their organization and the camp they operate every year in Pocahontas County, WV. The National Youth Science Camp is a residential science education program for young scientists the summer after they graduate from high school. Students from around the country are challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies, and have voluntary opportunities to participate in an outdoor adventure program, gain a new and deep appreciation for the great outdoors, and establish friendships that last a lifetime.
The National Youth Science Camp is made possible through the planning and fund-raising of the National Youth Science Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a mission to honor, sustain, and encourage youth interest and excellence in science by conducting comprehensive informal science education programs that provide opportunity for constructive interaction with others and emphasize the social value of thoughtful scientific careers.
The camp started in 1963 as part of West Virginian’s centennial celebration.
We also talked with Sharon Iskra and Tera Salango, Co-chairs for Pro-Kids, Inc. fundraising event.
Pro-Kids, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) corporation conveniently housed one block from the Piedmont Elementary within Charleston Baptist Temple, 209 Morris Street, Charleston, WV. We currently have 45 children ages 5-12 years old enrolled, with 9 more on a growing waiting list for entry.
PRO-Kids was designed to protect and help these youngsters during the afterschool hours of 2:00-5:00 p.m. when they might otherwise be endangered by dangerous activities. Every day of the school year, our staff members meet the children inside the school at dismissal and escort them to our facility, often with a detour to Celebration Station playground for exercise.
On October 28, 2017, they are hosting a Masquerade Mixer & Halloween adult party at Little Creek Country Club beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sponsorships and tickets are still available by contacting 304-553-4513.
We also interviewed Dwaine Osborne, Men’s Head Basketball Coach of the UC Golden Eagles. Coach discussed his journey to get to UC and how much he is enjoying his role as he begins his 5th season at the helm. He talked about the new Werhle Center, home to basketball and volleyball, and how much it helps in recruiting. His players love it he boasted.
