We also interviewed Gina Joynes, Director of Communications for WV State Treasurer’s Office. She talked about the operations of the office.
The State Treasurer is the chief financial officer for the state and is responsible for overseeing the state’s operating funds, monitoring the state’s debt and performing additional banking and accounting duties as prescribed by state law. The Treasurer also serves as a member of the major financial decision-making boards throughout state government.
Over the years, the office has widened its scope of duties beyond basic treasury functions. The State Treasurer now advocates for citizens’ rights through several programs mandated by state code and other valuable initiatives.
Gina also talked in detail about the SMART 529 College Savings Plan and their upcoming 3rd Annual 5.29K Run/Walk scheduled for May 20, 2017 beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Appalachian Power Park.
The SMART 5.29K Run/Walk raises money to establish SMART 529 College Savings Plans for children recently adopted out of the foster care system in West Virginia. All proceeds from the 5.29K registration, minus a $3.00 race fee, will be deposited into SMART 529 College Savings Accounts. The accounts will be awarded through a selection process administered by Frameworks and Mission West Virginia. This year’s race will be on Saturday, May 20, 2017, starting and finishing at the Appalachian Power Park (3rd Base Entrance on Smith Street). Check-In/Registration will begin at 7 a.m. The 5.29K run begins at 8 a.m. and the 5.29K Walk begins at 8:10 a.m. Packet Pickup is 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017 at center court of the Capitol Market on Smith Street.
