Highlights is a 30 minute weekly TV show featuring organizations, events, grass-roots efforts and people who move our state and community forward in a positive way.

The show is a collaboration with Kanawha County Schools, Suddenlink Communications and Jim Strawn & Company.

Highlights airs daily at 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Suddenlink’s channel 17.

The show airing July 4, 2022 – July 18, 2022 highlights Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in WV.

We interviewed Alicia Syner, Program Developer, Imagination Library in WV. She discussed history of the program.

Dolly launched the Imagination Library to honor her father—a smart, hardworking man that never learned to read or write. The program is meant to give children from all walks of life (from birth to age five) an opportunity that Dolly’s father never had. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library puts books into the hands and hearts of children. The books are hand selected by a committee of early childhood experts to be age-appropriate and align with the child’s development needs. The Imagination Library program is built on decades of reading research consistently demonstrating that having books at home helps children develop literacy skills. Since inception, the program has put over 182 million books into the hands of children around the world.

Families can register online at ImaginationLibrary.com.  Once enrolled, it takes approximately 10-12 weeks to receive the first book, which is Dolly’s favorite book—The Little Engine that Could. The Imagination Library mails six different books each month, depending on the age of the child. The last book received is Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come! This book means the child has graduated from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and is ready to move on to school.

If a family runs into technical issues while trying to register, they can call 304.410.0431 or e-mail imaginationlibrary@k12.wv.us and someone will reach out to assist them.

She discussed plans for “An Evening with Dolly” to celebrate early childhood literacy and statewide launch of the Imagination Library in West Virginia. This is a private, invitation only event. However, we do have sponsorship opportunities available. All proceeds benefit Imagination Library. Anyone interested in learning more can e-mail Alicia at syner7@marshall.edu.
