The show airing April 3, 2017 – April 17, 2017 ‘highlights’ the Seafood Nutrition Partnership & the WVU Mountaineer Athletic Club’s Annual Scholarship Dinner. We interviewed Linda Cornish, President, Seafood Nutrition Partnership. Linda has been in her role for 4 years. She talked about the mission and purpose of the national Seafood Nutrition Partnership. Seafood Nutrition Partnership (SNP) is the leading 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the U.S. building awareness of the health and nutritional benefits of seafood. SNP is addressing the country’s public health crisis through education programs that inspire Americans to incorporate more seafood and omega-3s into their diets for improved health as per USDA Dietary Guidelines. In October 2015, SNP launched a national public health education campaign.
Their mission is to inspire a healthier America through partnerships that raise awareness about the essential nutritional benefits of eating seafood.
She discussed West Virginia’s health landscape, specifically heart disease and strokes. WV has the 4th highest rate of cardiovascular disease in the U.S. Heart disease is the #1 killer in WV, while stroke is the #5 killer in WV.
Eating seafood twice a week can literally save your life.
She also encouraged viewers to take the Healthy Heart Pledge. Currently, 2700 West Virginians have taken the pledge. SNP of WV has set a goal to double that this year.
She also spoke excitedly about the partnership with WVU and Marshall University. Students at both universities are educating their communities about the health and nutritional benefits of seafood by signing up fellow classmates, faculty and the public for the Healthy Heart Pledge (HHP). The HHP is a voluntary commitment to consume seafood at least twice a week, as recommended by the USDA/HHS Dietary Guidelines.
